A&T Grill's
Condo Plans
on
Front Burner

As far as diners go, people who live in Rogers Park will tell you that there are a couple places to go to get an omelet or a short stack--and then there is the A&T Grill on Clark Street.

For those who rely on the decades-old restaurant, 7030 N. Clark St., for a place to kick back in a cushiony booth and try to drink down a bottomless cup of Joe, a major disappointment could be in store.

The owner of the restaurant, Pete Fromimos, went before Alderman Joe Moore's, D-49th, zoning advisory committee last week with a plan to tear down the restaurant and rebuild it while adding three stories of condominiums above it.

It's not clear how long the restaurant would close. Mary Fromimos declined to comment on the project other that to say that the plan is "very preliminary" at this point and would most likely involve reopening in the new space.

Appearing before the committee for a second time within the year, Fromimos recently pitched a scaled back four-story, 18-unit brick building that would require a zoning change before it could be built. Two below market rate units would be secured in the project.

Initially Fromimos asked to build a six-story building on the lot. But that proposal was shot down by the committee who told them "to go back to the drawing board," aldermanic aide Michael Land said.

The zoning advisory committee members tabled voting on the project until a community meeting is convened, most likely not before April, Land said.

There are a few design kinks that Fromimos' architect has been advised to work out before the neighborhood has a chance to weigh in.

Pete did not go before the committee. It was presented by an architect.

A Pioneer Press reporter wrote this article without attending. This is irresponsible and scary.

Apparently Ms. Caputo is willing to write up stories reporting on Moore's insider, campaign contributor zoning committee, stories that read AS IF she were there, but are based on the version of Moore's paid staff.

This is extremely disappointing and illustrates how we as a community cannot rely on the traditional press to provide the sunshine we so desparately need.

hugh-

we all know who was in attendance that night.

unless mr.fromimos is noneother than the architect (doo dads ), i believe ms. caputo is incorrect.

she is correct that the doo dads need revision and for this i am most grateful.

Good catch Hugh, although I think Angela's heart is in the right place on this...

But you're right, it would have been better if she had been there, or asked Michael L. who was...I believe it was Mr. Fromimos' architect who presented to ZLUAC, but I don't remember seeing that individual's name on the sign in sheet - could they be one and the same person?

No. Pete is the short-order cook/restauranteur. And it's Fronimos, she couldn't even get that right. (In her defense, maybe Land gave it to her wrong.)

The architect is Chris George.
